Re: Copyright infringement

Not so, Jeff. Not only are you not an infringer, posting links is exactly 
what the copyright owner wants you to do.

Any infringement would have come from Lon's recommendation that instead of 
links people should cut and paste complete articles to the list. Such 
postings would be clear cut violations, which is what I suggested to him 
off-list. 

Incidentally, whether or not you (the universal you, Jeff, not you 
personally) are in infringement has nothing to do with any financial losses 
suffered by the copyright holder, or whether you profited by the illegal use. 
Such losses could be a contributing factor in any legal settlement. But 
infringement is using without permission for any purpose. 

I really don't understand why so many people have problems understanding the 
copyright laws. They are not particularly difficult. But I know that many 
people---from my writing students to long-established professionals---seem to 
believe they are more complicated than they are.
