Re: Who's the audience

My readers are split into two other categories.  The first are those who are year round residents who seem to be pretty seasoned and dedicated gardeners.  The second group are those who are in the community either as part timers or seasonal residents...Memorial Day to Labor Day.  There is also an ever growing third group...those who have decided to move from the city and live in the Hamptons year round...or at least leave their spouses and kids here year round.

I feel somewhat compelled to reach them all, but not all at the same time.  During the year I try to keep the column somewhat advanced and aimed at experienced gardeners who are forever seeking new plant material and old plant material and growing methods that did not get past down from previous generations.  Interspersed I include columns in late winter, early spring and late summer aimed at the neophyte gardener who may be timid and need some prodding or may need encouragement after a rough summer but still needs to get things put to bed before winter.

There is a group that's is yet smaller....even tiny...who never ceases to amaze me.  These are the seasonal residents who own homes in several places but whose paper subscription follows them from home to home, season to season.  These readers have sent me mail from France, Switzerland, Vermont, Colorado, Florida and a few I can't remember.

In a nutshell I think the key is to always try to challenge your reader, especially in an established weekly column.
