Promix is a good base, although it definitely needs additions. First and very importantly, it needs a draining agent such as perlite or pumice. I also add worm compost and sometimes peat, depending on what I'm planting. Some caution is also needed when watering, because it tends to stay moist for quite awhile and then be dry suddenly. African violets do very well with Promix, but certain other plants aren't as pleased with it.
