Re: Who's the Audience

Although at one time I did a fair amount of garden writing I have mostly evolved into a garden lecturer. I love lecturing, it gives me the opportunity to show off my slides and the audiences have been overwhelmingly enthusiastic.

Local libraries and garden clubs are where I lecture the most. In the past two years I've noticed a huge upswing in the number of attendees. Last year many libraries had to bring in extra chairs as they never expected full capacity for a gardening lecture.

The majority of attendees are novice gardeners but they are there because they want to learn. I encourage them to ask questions during the program since they often won't remember the name of a plant at the end of the lecture. My favorites are the women in their 30's and 40's who come with their Mothers. The Mom's are always so thrilled to share their love of gardening with their daughters.

The hardest group I lecture to is a Republican club that has called me back 4 years in a row for their May meeting. Almost all the members are not gardeners but they keep having me back so something must be working. Last year I did a program on garden accessories/junk/shabby chic kind of stuff and they loved it. This year I'm bringing some actual "junk" with me and I'll do a hands on demonstration on how to use items as containers.

Give me the novice gardener any day, after all, weren't we all a novice at one time?
