Margaret,
I'd be interested in knowing where you've heard that yard makeovers last an average of six months. I'm involved in the Blooms of Bressingham program, and that's not been our experience at all.
As for such instant installations being the "source" of gardeners' craving for instant gratification, I think it would be more accurate to say they're a symptom of a larger addiction -- wanting it all, wanting it now -- afflicting modern society as a whole. Gardeners, although clearly a more evolved group, are not immune.

But you've raised an interesting question. I'll see if I can find out what's become of the gardens we've given away.
