Maybe the Garden Writer's Association research could include some
questions that would give insights as to what aspects of gardening
appeal to people (choose three statements that describe your interest in
gardens and gardening, for example)  as well as why they read garden
magazines.

Won't deal with all of the issues but it might be interesting.
