Re: Need (easy) writing advice

Newspapers can set their own style, but Associated Press (style guide used by most newspapers) says you refer to them by their whole name if there's any chance of confusion.

Hey all, this might be an easy question for all of you, but it is
giving me problems. The article I'm writing is for a
newspaper. Typically they like last names for repeat
references to the same person. How do you deal with
quotes from a whole family with the same last name...
especially if you go back and forth among the members?
Do you use their whole name? Do you "assume" the
reader knows who you are refering?

My story involves a son, mother and grandmother with the
same last name.

Thanks,
Sandie Parrott

Subject: [GWL] a web site for Melanie

Hi all, first post ever to this list.

Melanie,

I would think that any garden writer (in fact any communication
professional) should have a web site. How much you want to spend and
how "flash" (no pun intended) it might be --- well who knows.

A very simple (and I mean very simple) way to get your work online is
to get a weblog. At Blogger - http://www.blogger.com - they will
provided you with a web log for free. Sure its pretty plain (but still
looks nice) - but it requires no knowledge of html or ftp'ing or
anything - just type, highlight and add urls for links --- basically
if you can use m'soft word you can use blogger!-- so easy. To set up
takes two minutes max! I've found a web log is a good way to start. My
weblog is at blogger - http://www.dehiscent.blogspot.com - have a
look to see what it is - i post every few days and add links to
horticultural and gardening news around the web. Paul Krantz, the
executive editor of Better Homes and Gardens Online etc has a blog at
Blogger as well - called The Plain Dirt Gardener its at
http://plaindirtgardener.blogspot.com/ have a look at that as well.

there are off course lots of "tools" you can add to your blog such as
a comment/feedback system (so readers can say nice things about you
and your writing) such as the one offered by halo scan - again the
basic system is free.
http://www.haloscan.com/news/

And if you do know a little html you can tweak the appearance of your
site. (mine is tweaked a little)

If you wish to get a little more fancy you can register a url (I
think go daddy are the cheeeepest - but what do i know?)
http://www.godaddy.com then find a web host (http://www.liverack.com/
give you 100mb of space for $3 a month!!) and have your blog ftp'ed up
to that site. - no need for a designer!

there are a number of other blog sites that provide similar services
(eg diaryland.com , moveable type etc but I think Blogger is
simplest - I have tried a few of the free ones and think for 0$
blogger is exceptional value.

Just think - you could be publishing on-line in 5 minutes time! Go for
it!

PS if you are a writer with longer articles choose the one-entry to a
page option (you'll see what I;m talking about when you register your
blog)- this enables you to create links to exact stories/articles.
