Re: Pressurized timbers

Deb & all,

First of all, I have no proof behind any of these statements. I also look forward to hard proof regarding any toxicity of pressurized lumber.

As a Mom, gardener and children's garden designer I have decided to not use any pressurized lumber in any garden I design. The first time I read a report about pressure treated lumber I was enjoying my first children's garden with my 3 year old daughter. It was enclosed with pressure treated landscaping ties. We removed the ties and removed several feet of surrounding soil.

Reports varied. As I understood them then, it wasn't that the plants were "poisoned". Indeed, the plants in that garden grew quite well. Pressure treated lumber is made with arsenic. The reports I read stated that an amount of arsenic then leached into the soil and possibly into the plants. Since we like to eat from the garden I decided it was better to be safe and no longer use pressure treated lumber anywhere I would be growing edibles (just about everywhere including herbs).

At that same time (11 years ago) I also remember reading that most children's wooden play structures were also built with pressure treated lumber. A scary thought to me.
