I agree that they have scientific names -- I take exception to the statement
that they don't have botanical or zoological names.

I'm not familiar with that portion of the ICN, but I know the ICNCP and ICBN
allow for it, as does the RHS based on their work with those two 
codes.  Could you point out the section that shows that they're wrong (I
mean that seriously -- I'm curious).

Usually arrogant, or ignorant.  :)  I agree.

You mean, like saying that it's a botanical name vs. a zoological one?
;) However, what's to stop someone from naming an animal with the same
name as a plant at a later date after publication?  Wouldn't it make more
sense to be proactive than reactive by discerning between botanical name
or possible zoological names up front?
