In the discussion of blogs, here's a thought. If you go to http://www.livejournal.com you can sign up for a free account which allows you what is an online diary to record your thoughts and comments. Think of it as a "warmup" blog because it's only accessible by readers who have signed up (for free) with LiveJournal, so it's rather "ingrown" compared to blogging on a website open to anyone who comes by.
In fact, here's a quote from a user that, while a little blunt, is an interesting way to put it:
"
A blog is anything published serially, usually timestamped, usually text-based, and rarely professionally. LiveJournal offers both RSS feeds and user comments, which usually go with blogs, though neither is a requirement.
What most differentiates LiveJournal from other blogging services are the inbound facing community aspects. These are the friendlists, user icons, searchable interest and location lists, phone post transcribing and member-only polls. All these features are designed for interacting with other members as opposed to anyone who comes across your page. A blog doesn't need these things to be a blog, and most are unique to LJ.
Technically an LJ blog isn't any different from any other, though LJ bloggers are seen as second class citizens in the blogging community. LJers are assumed to be pissy girls or teenagers full of angst by default, so you're less likely to be taken seriously than you would be with another service.
The advantage of something like LiveJournal is that it gives a place where you can try out your skills before putting a blog on a site visible to any and everyone. So for really new writers, it's worth a try for a startup.
