THE DETROIT NEWS
I sent the comments about the lack of tropicals to a friend of mine who was at the show. His reply I thought was interesting.

Hi Suzanne,
I would have been very surprised and disappointed to see large displays of tropical foliaged plants at the Philadelphia Flower Show this year. Apparently the WSJ writer that was quoted failed to grasp that the theme of the show this year was "AMERICA, THE BEAUTIFUL" and celebrated the American heirloom plants, that are mostly derived from Native plants, shrubs and trees. Only 1 state(HI) and portions of a few others(FL,CA. TX &AZ) grow tropical plants and I think there was ample representation, considering the Orchid displays and a marvelous display of tropical fruit, called "THE LEMONADE STAND". A number of displays featured only Native plants, which I considered very appropriate in keeping with the theme. Is this WSJ writer a novice or under the influence? I am completely baffled by this apparent lack of comprehension.
Regards,
jim
