Doreen --
I saw the same article and had the same reactions as everyone who has replied on the list. However, I would add that tropicals were indeed in use throughout the Philadelphia show. They were clearly more subtle and used around water features, e.g., elephant ears, as well as for emphasis and drama interspersed in borders. I also saw some smashing containers with cannas (mostly 'Phaison' and 'Tropicana') and other tropicals. It might be the contrast in the reporter's mind to the previous show that was a riot of tropicals, again in keeping with the theme. Or maybe he doesn't know a tropical when he sees one?

like to buy a copy of it from you, as I don't subscribe to the Wall Street

Fewer tropicals seen at Philly flower show
Are tropical plants on their way out? That was the gist of a Wall Street
Journal article after the big Philadelphia Flower Show. "Among the more than
two dozen lavishly landscaped exhibits at the largest annual flower show in
the U.S., attendees were hard-pressed to find any of the banana trees, giant
elephant ears, cannas, caladiums and other tropical plants that have been a
staple of the gardening world the past few years," the Journal reported.
Many of the displays, though, harkened back to another era of gardening,
featuring stately delphiniums and snapdragons as well as diminutive
primroses and common yellow daffodils.
