Seeds

The trend for food varieties has its roots in more people homesteading I
think. Awareness is up about chemical usage on our food. In the food
department there is a huge move towards organics. I think people feel unsure
of our government and our future.

Another issue I have noticed is a lot of plants that should be annuals or
are sold as annuals are not. For example I have a Livingstonia chinensis
growing here in zone 5/6. Many people have said that cannot grow here but it
is doing fine outside in the ground with minimal protection. I am also
growing the Mioga Ginger outside in the ground with no protection and it
comes back every year. There are other tropical plants as well that over
winter outside here and are not a bit invasive.

Salvia Evolution is going to be a perennial for me as is Salvia Black and
Blue. There are others of course that should have died out that have not.
Many of my plants foliage has remained evergreen all winter.

Part of the plant invasiveness issue may have to do with inadequate testing
before a plant is released to the public. Another issue that I am sure has
to do with it is many gardeners allow their plants to set numerous seeds. If
a plant is kept deadheaded and only allowed to set enough seed for the
gardener and maybe a bit to share than it is really hard for that plant to
spread all over the place. Maybe what we need to do is educate gardeners on
the proper maintenance procedures for their plants.
