Re: George Ball's NYT op-ed article
Kathy Jentz brings up yet another interesting and alarming thread here...the
growing number of mean greenies who abhor anything that is a hybrid. Some of
them also spill over to denouncing any plants that are grafted or budded,
but hybrids of all sorts seem to be their main target (unless you dare to
mention GE'd plants!).
I see much of this anti-hybrid fervor as stemming from ignorance. I've
been hybridizing plants for years in my back yard, mostly begonias and
roses, and I hardly think it's an unpatriotic endeavor...or ruining the
ecology of anything in particular. The whole thread of this discussion is
very interesting, and bothersome too, because I, like most of ya'll out
there in GWL land, don't most of us consider ourselves ecologists at heart?
Extremists, no matter how well-intentioned, can soil almost any good thing,
and that's what I see happening here....even if G. Ball did have a few of
his facts out of order.
