Re: George Ball's NYT op-ed article

Kathy,
that's bad news and good information. As soon as it's warm enough, I'll be helping a neighbor plant several hundred 'Stella de Oro' on a bank that's difficult and dangerous to mow. I recommended the variety and found the liners for him. Guess I'd be an outlaw in Takoma Park.
It would be useful to know exactly what this group is lobbying for. A local ordinance change? To what governing body are they making their pitch?

I ask again: Who are these native plants bullies George is so worried about?
Who is threatening gardeners' rights to plant non-natives? Name some names.

In my own backyard - Takoma Park, MD - there is a lobby to make it ILLEGAL to
plant anything but natives. They are gaining supporters daily. So much for
free-will, choice and live-and-let-live. We welcome immigrant workers here (even

illegals), but not their plant cousins. Thank goodness I'm one block outside
of TP borders.

As to people who are "plant nazis" - I went to a workshop last week where a
speaker was shouted down by one such type for daring to saying daylily hybrids
were useful in rain garden settings. She was a real bully - and left the
speaker (a botanist) in tears. If I had her name, I'd gladly share it with all.

Sincerely,
Kathy Jentz
