Re: Decline in edible gardening
Community gardens could be placed on school grounds, schools wouldn't have
to be open but the water source extended. This would also give many young
families who live in apartment complexes garden space. I know it's a
different culture but in France, families take great pride in having
gardened in the same allotment for generations. Permanent structures are
allowed and these offer places for refreshment and socializing, as well as
tool storage, a place to support a climbing rose. Retirees will spend the
day there, going home as the garden closes for the night. Working families
come in after work and take their time in the long summer evenings. A great
deal of peer-teaching takes place, as well as competition. Heirlooms are
shared...
When I moved east I bought a house only after researching whether I could
get into a community garden. The one that we have here, and I've never
found out how to get into it, is on the river flats and it floods every
spring. It often can't be worked until a month or so after my garden is
already planted. So, of course, no permanent structures, less socializing,
etc.

The problem with elementary school gardens is that school gets out
for summer vacation so early in the season and most schools don't
have the ability to keep the garden going thru the summer so the kids
could pick up the fall season. I've always thought the Master
Gardeners would be a good resource for maintaining the school's
garden during the summer.
