Powerpoint lectures

Yes, Jo Ellen - I agree that most of the time text is a problem. I use powerpoint and keynote in the same way I use slides - the image fills the screen. It is nice to be able to fade from image to image seamlessly, and having the plant name appear on the screen prevents the raised hands from people who ask "How do you spell that?" even though the name is on their handout. For some presentations I might have one slide that lists the three items I'm about to illustrate, to get people up to speed on what we're covering - then I go on to the photo-filled slides that illustrate those points.

Sometimes actual plants are great, but what do you all do in January, February and March if you're talking about perennials or annuals? (or April in my area if I'm realistic about the seasons!) And if I'm speaking about trees??? Yesterday I was speaking to a group of 300 plus - there is no way the people in the middle of that ballroom would have seen an actual plant, let alone the back of the room. Having an image on a screen - if you pick the right image - is much more appropriate for large audiences.

You can adjust the brightness of the slides so that they are not as washed out, provided you get to the venue in advance and are able to check how bright that particular projector shows the image...at least you can on Keynote, and I assume you can on Powerpoint as well.

And again, a good speaker will carry the day and get the information across in an engaging way, washed out slides or not.
