Re: More Good News on an Old Topic & Request for Expert
Doreen, I don't know whether you are writing about a specific area, but Dale
Hendricks is co-owner of North Creek Nurseries in Landenberg, Pennsylvania,
a wholesale propagation nursery for native plants. Dale is a sought-after
lecturer on natives, often speaks at the Native Plants in the Landscape
Conference at Millersburg University, and is also an expert on native meadows -- he's
very down to earth with lots of practical advice. Just a few years ago,
North Creek introduced a branded line of native plants called American Beauties
to make selection easier for the average gardener who wants to go green but
doesn't know a whole lot about it; I wrote about this line at its introduction,
and as I recall the intent was to adjust the mix of plants offered under the
label regionally. Don't know whether that has happened yet. North Creek's
web site is _http://www.northcreeknurseries.com/_
(http://www.northcreeknurseries.com/)
There is enormous interest in native plants in the Greater Philadelphia
region, and many public gardens offer workshops and lectures and demos on how to
use them in the garden, in containers, as hummingbird and butterfly lures, to
create wildlife corridors, etc... plus there are several big native plant
sales each year (in addition to commercial nurseries' offerings) to make it
easy for homeowners to make sure they are buying natives.
Also, Mt Cuba Center, in northern Delaware, has for many years specialized
in the study of native plants of the Piedmont, and is wonderful source of
information on native plants and how to use them.
Another source for consumer info on how to use native plants is Bowman's
Hill Wildflower Preserve in Bucks County, Pa. -- Nancy Beaubaire, one of its top
staffers and a former landscape designer, has landscaped her own property
with natives, and often lectures about it (I've seen her lecture at the
Millersville conference). She has lots of practical know-how.
As for increasing interest in vegetable gardening, I was talking to Suzi
McCoy of the Garden Media Group in Chester County about that just a couple of
weeks ago, and she had some industry figures to back it up.

No big surprise here, Doreen
You can not pick up a trade magazine without seen more than one article
per publication on the subject of going green or related information. Been
reaching a critical mass in the past two years in particular. If you have a
nursery that specializes in native plants, then you know it is a subject
largely ignored by mass media, but we have been active all along .. and
growing in numbers. Did an article on the subject about 5 years back and no
one would touch it. Every year we sell out of just about every native plant
we can get our hands on. Been increasing steadily for the past 10 years that
I know of.... probably more if I sat and calculated time lines.
I do slide presentation on the natives as great garden perennials every
year......
Good to see the rest of the world catching up.
You should have been sitting in on Ann Ball at Morton Arboretum couple
of weeks back......
