Re: Vegetable revival

I, too, was intrigued (at the SF F&G Show) to hear David Speer of Better
Homes & Gardens, keynote speaker at the GWA reception, say that
30-somethings are becoming more interested in vegetable gardening.
Coincidentally, the following week, I visited, on assignment, the garden of
a highly successful 37-year-old bachelor with an impressive potager in his
backyard. I asked him why, and he shrugged and said, "What can I say? I'm
green. I want organic food, the fresher the better." He decides what to grow
and does the eventual harvesting; his gardener does the rest.
Gardenwriters from all over the US have noted this trend in recent
GWL postings, a fact I've made my editors at San Diego Home/Garden magazine
aware of, to validate in their eyes one of the garden columns I've been
writing for them for years. ("Edibles," which appears in tandem with
"Ornamentals," each month introduces a great fruit or vegetable for
Southwest gardens.)
