I do this all the time with flowering shrubs -- azaleas, hydrangeas, roses,
etc. Like you, the first time was by accident. Now I put them in the Bilko
cellarway door in fall, where it gets very cold but seldom freezes. When
buds appear, I move them to an unheated sunporch where it gets very warm on
a sunny March day and drops at night but only into the high 40s. When flower
buds are ready to open, I can move them to regular room temperature. So
depending on your actual conditions and the amount of light on your back
porch, I'd consider moving them there now. Moving them straight from cold to
room temperature can cause weak new growth and bud blast.
