Re: commercial blogs and other commercial writing
What you offer to write for them determines what kind of writing it is.
It certainly would not be journalism, if that's what you're asking. I'm
not sure I know what you mean by "garden journalist." To get back to your
question, if you are writing PR, marketing, or advertising for them, you
are writing business copy. That is not "independent" writing or thinking.
It is helping someone promote a business.
If you are writing articles about plants, gardening, etc., that is just
for the information of the reader and not designed to promote specific
products that your client sells, that would be straight garden writing.
I see no reason why one person can't have two separate jobs. Although I
no longer choose to do so, I wrote PR, ad, and sales copy, as well as
straight informational pieces for more than 30 years. It pays the bills.
Philosophically speaking, even when we are writing to inform, we are
still selling --- a point of view --- either our own, or the
publication's for which we write.
