Re: commercial blogs and other commercial writing
Dan is spot on. I too work for an independent garden center - I run a consultation service, plan educational programs and will soon blog for this business. I also write monthly articles for two publications, one local. I host a radio program (and the garden center that I work for does not advertise on that program although three other local garden centers do - go figure) and run my own garden coaching business in my copious spare time. :-) When on the radio my loyalty is to my listeners and sponsors, when at the garden center my loyalty is to my employer, when writing my loyalty is to my readers, and when on my clients property my loyalty is to my client. How to balance it all ethically? Honesty. When I'm on the radio, at the garden center, speaking, writing, and consulting I tell the truth as I see it, no matter what any of my employers/clients think. My listeners, audiences, readers, customers, and clients know that I will be honest with tehm, and that's what makes it al
l work. I see no conflict because I am always true to myself, my experiences, and my beliefs - this is why, I think, that the garden center, radio, magazines, customers, and clients keep me around, and why many people return to my blog/website.
