Re: money from blogs

 Marina,
What do you want to do? It seems to me that the smart thing is to start with that. Clearly, you (we) want to make money so you don't have to continue to dip into the 401K. But I think that the only reason to start a blog is if you see that it would feed what you want to be doing more of. The speaker at the last GWA region 1 meeting was of the opinion that a blog should feed people to your website, and your website should feed your work, which was an interesting thought.

You could write freelance blogs for those nurseries that know you, look for a hort buisness that needs a blog writer, look for a regular monthly gig, work at a garden center doing all of their writing, etc etc. But like anyone starting a business, you need to know what you'd like to be doing and then look and see if a blog would feed that in some way.

For me, I'm always looking to do more speaking because that is what I love and do best. My website is primarily to promote my speaking/writing and the blog promotes both from the direction I'm most interested in, which is how gardening is a part of a whole life. My goal is to do more speaking about this perspective, not just to garden groups but also to women's groups, churches etc. The blog recently captured the interest of an agent, and we're working on a book proposal that is similar to what I am doing in the blog. So the blog is, I hope, going to end up taking me closer to my goals.

If I were you I'd start with what you'd like to be doing, and then work backwards to see if a website/blog or other online presence will help take you there.
all the best,
C.L.
