Carolyn,
Twitter, and yes, the others you mention, are all ways to get your name and what you are about into a larger arena. There are many that say that this is where relationships/reputations/communications are going. Who knows. But beyond that, I'm interested because of a conversation I had with my agent, someone who is deep in the publishing world. She said that what she hears from editors is that they are primarily interested in writers who "have a big platform." Platform meaning exposure in the media. If you are on HGTV you have a big platform, for example. For those of us who are NOT on HGTV, one way to get a larger platform is online - blogs, website, twitter, Linkedin etc. - and since we are starting with smaller platforms, putting many of these together might be to our advantage. As a dear friend of mine says, "It can't hurt."
