I think you've hit on a problem: everyone's blogging (talking), nobody's reading (listening). I get the feeling that garden bloggers seem to write for each other (or themselves), and haven't really been able to find an audience in regular gardeners. 

I would guess that bloggers who had names in the gardening world before they started blogging have a wider audience. I think that accounts for the attention Margaret Roach has enjoyed with her blog right from the beginning. However, she retains her popularity not because she's known as ex-Martha editor, but because her blog is uncommonly good, very personal, idiosyncratic, and plain fun to read and follow. She is also generous in interacting with her audience.
