Fwd: is gardening too complicated?
I think gardening is alot like cooking. Beginning cooks open cans
and dump. Beginning gardeners dig holes and dump. If they are
successful, they move on. If not, they quit.
The great news for gardeners is, today there are a lot of no-brainers
- annuals, perennials, shrubs and trees, available to get started.
Newbies are more than willing to following simple directions, like
those on a box cake mix. They want to do it right. Once their hooked,
it's on to cakes from scratch. So giving them some direction is a
good thing. Taste is in the mouth of the beholder. Young women, our
prime target market, have learned from cable TV, that a stylist is a
good thing when it comes to putting together a wardrobe. When it comes
to the landscape the ask the advice of a garden designer.
I give garden talks to hundreds of gardeners every spring and I poll
them about their reading habits - garden magazines and books. A
majority, I'm talking about John and Jane Q Public here, do not buy
gardening books. Most buy their magazines off the the racks of the
checkout counters in grocery stores.
Regarding the comment about organic garden or NOT - and yes I am
yelling here. That kind of attitude turns folks off. I resent the
"it's my way or the highway attitude" and I think alot of others do
also. Our job is to turn folks on. Once one developes a love plants
and nature organic gardening is any easy sell.
