"Books you don't need in a place you can't find."
It's Seth Grodin's opinion that bookstores will soon be like gift stores. He says "The goal isn't a commodity transaction with maximum selection at a minimum price, the goal is an experience worth seeking out and paying for." I'm reminded of when my husband and I happened on The Green Arcade on Market Street in San Francisco last December. Being there was an experience, and yes, we spent money. Subject: Re: [GWL] Fwd: is gardening too complicated?
The thing that occurred to me when this thread started was that there are
some area where gardeners become hesitant to move because of the rules that
we promote. Pruning is one prime example - you should prune some shrubs in
spring, some in fall and roses you prune very precisely (the 5th bud,
outward facing???). No one actually says that if the arbor rose is making the
whole thing impassible in July, that you really can go ahead a prune it in
July (or better yet in June). For all the pruning rules out there - bad
pruning rarely kills a shrub . You can make it ugly, you can delay flowering,
but you do not kill them - otherwise the utility companies would really be in
trouble!
So I sometimes feel that we set ourselves up as experts and that makes
beginners think there is only one way to do things. Yes, there are good ways,
and not so good - but plants do have a great desire to live regardless, so
perhaps The cooking idea is correct - you can make a chilli one way or a
dozen other ways - it still generally tastes decent.

I think gardening is alot like cooking. Beginning cooks open cans
and dump. Beginning gardeners dig holes and dump. If they are
successful, they move on. If not, they quit.
