Re: What to Plant When
So how about the phenology bit? Doesn't matter where you are, there will
always be certain events that occur at the same time.
The relationships of these events are, generally, the same: those related
events might happen during the 2nd week in April in one area of the
continent, the 3rd week in another and so, but those events are the same.
Want to know when your soil wakes up in the spring, the magical 12degC? Look
at a forsythia plant, a pretty decent soil thermometer, and as you know,
blooms when the soil reaches 12deg C. the plant might be planted in Nova
Scotia, Ontario, Oregon or 40 miles inland, its still going to bloom at "the
same time."
When common lilac is in full bloom you can check for the pine needle scale -
dormant oil is effective, you've got a 8-10 day period.
All sorts of neat stuff can be found on the web
The best place to find this info is in your garden journal ( Betty Mackey
has one or two if you don't.)
