I used purple metal mini-bushel baskets last year for lavender.  Mulched the 
soil with fine white gravel.  The lavender loved it!  So did rosemary, 
oregano and basil I planted in another tub.  I'd conclude that the extra 
gathered heat is wonderful for Mediterranean plants, desert plants like 
cacti and succulents and other that seek heat.
