Hi Mary,

I maintain an archive for Tom Clothier of his now shuttered, but famous, 'Garden Walk and Talk'
site at

His notes on Asclepias exaltata say

   Sow at -4 to +4ÂC (24-39ÂF) for 4 wks in moistened sand, move to 20ÂC (68ÂF) for germination

There's a ton of info there for anyone writing about seed-based plant
propagation, despite the 1998 web design.
