Re: bees and box store plants ................ Nicholas response.

Hello Andrew,

Have been watching the string of messages going back and forth and have to chime in on your thought. Forgive me for using my birthplace as an example ............ There is a monster disconnect between the farming and gardening community. In England the Royal Horticulture Society and The Farmers Union, not to be confused with the unions we all read about in the newspapers, the farming community in England live under this umbrella. Anyway both groups of people are working together on pollinator/neonicotinoids research. I understand that a number of neonicotinoids have been removed from the marketplace for a period of two years, and are being studied for their effect on honey bees and other pollinators. My mother is a bee keeper in the county of Suffolk, having some 30 hive's and works closely with several local farmers helping to pollinate local crops. Had a few days with her last year and was a learning experience.

As an aside....I run into more and more rural gardeners and small farmers who are isolated from the large commercial farms.  Many of them seem to be getting into beekeeping and raising their own honey and pollinators.  Haven't found one who has had an issue with hive collapse.  Don't get me wrong...not saying it doesn't exist as it clearly does and is a major issue...just saying that those beekeepers that I'm running into who are isolated from commercial farming operations don't' seem to have the problem.  Yes, it's anecdotal, but sure makes me suspicious and wondering why commercial agriculture isn't catching on.
