And today you can learn two things. There are two names for such a pot,
both French, and I have been watching for the second -- jardiniere - to
pop up.
The problem of finding a word that is hiding from you is a familiar one
for most writers. One book I refer to often is _Random House Word Menu _
The size of a good thesaurus, it consists of lists of words in catagories
and sub-categories. Whaddya call that shape that common clay pots are?
Look under shapes -- frustrum. The pale coloration that results from
blocking light? Under Gardening, sub category Practice, Tools &
Techniques -- etiolation. It is well indexed and easy to use.
Another handy reference is _What's What_ from Hammond. This is a large
book of drawings and diagrams of all sorts of things with all the parts
named. A rake is made up of the teeth or tines, the bow, tang, ferrule,
and handle.
As for cachepots and jardinieres for gallon containers, they do make
them, but you have to keep your eye out. They're also easy to make from
any semi-rigid scrap material. You know those faux bamboo roll-up shades
used to shade porches? Got an old one in the garage? A can of spray paint
lets you match any decor. If you have a penchant for the tacky, a glue
gun and silk flowers or old costume jewelry can dress it up.
I keep a dozen or so jardinieres in place in the house in summer and an
assortment of gallon pots with easy flowers growing outside in the sun.
When company is coming, I grab those that are at their peak and drop them
in the jardinieres -- five minutes.
