RE: broadcasters
Getting a paid TV gig today is not impossible, nor is winning a
Pulitzer, which is not to say they both require the same level of
talent. There are, however, quantifiable benefits of getting your puss
in front of large audiences on a regular basis and in some cases this
may be equate to remuneration of some degree. I did a weekly 4 minute
segment on FOX 5 TV out of NYC for about ten years and a many segments
on the "B. Smith with Style" national program. The FOX gig actually paid
OK in the beginning but later underwent the classic reshuffling and told
me my segment was very important to them but they could no longer pay
(huh?). I had been using the exposure to attract and win speaking
engagements, hawk my books, and even enhance my landscape design
business. There is something magical about being "on TV" in the eyes of
the public and many times, as I competed for a large landscape design
project, I felt the TV thing had a big hand in tipping the scales. So I
continued to do the thing pro bono in the belief that I still got paid
in other venues from it. This was up until a few years ago when farming
became my mistress but I think it's still true that being a TV
personality, even on a small scale, can enhance income from other
pursuits. I definitely agree with Jeff, however, that you need to get
experience. I too started out with my own small local cable show that
had 5 viewers. In my case, however, I'm sure I lost 4 of them with the
first couple of episodes. It can be really hard to make it look easy.
Getting comfortable, knowing where and where not to look or what to do
with you hands, thinking on your feet while not loosing a beat when a
guest or the host of a show throws a curve off subject, etc, can only
come with practice. On the other hand, I look at some of the talent
making some impressive bucks out there today and scratch my head, so
what do I know.
Cheers, Greg
