Re: Most Frequent Questions

Doreen,

The questions vary by the time of year.  For example, right now it's all about rhodys and other broad leafed evergreens.  The winter was brutal on them and they look pretty ratty so many people want to know what's wrong, what to do, etc. Also, right now, a lot of questions are about insects and especially carpenter ants as they start cruising for food sources.  Third category of questions in early season is pruning: what to prune, when and how.  And in my area we have large herds of deer who have been out foraging, especially the pregnant and nursing does.  There are many questions about restoring damaged plants, what to plant that they won't eat and preventing future marauding.

In July and August as lawns begin to show signs of diseases and suffer from hot and dry weather (and in many cases no supplemental watering), the questions turn to grass: again, what's wrong and what to do.  In this case, there is little or no patience -- most people want their grass to improve overnight!  Then they ask about their berry bushes (blueberries and raspberries mostly) and why their lilacs didn't bloom.

The hydrangea question is always there as are questions about roses (what to do to make them look like roses pictured in magazines and advertisements).

There's never a problem picking a subject to write about!

Regards,

Subject: [GWL] Most Frequent Questions

There are many of you who write weekly or monthly columns for newspapers and web sites. Some of you have call-in radio programs, too. May I pick your brains?  What are the most frequently asked questions pertaining to gardening?  I'm trying to get a sense of what puzzles novice gardeners.  Their questions may give light to some of the subjects we should be covering on a regular basis.
