Re: Most Frequent Questions

Melanie Vassallo, Long Island NY zone 6b

Like Lorraine, I'm often questioned about roses.

When I wrote a Q & A column for LongIslandGardening, there were many inquiries on what to plant as a privacy hedge, that might just be a local issue.

The question asked most often at this time of year is "why didn't my tulips bloom" or "how can I keep the squirrels/deer/rabbits from eating my tulips?". Last week I was at a library where the entire exterior planting had been ravaged by deer. I told the lecture attendees to check out the tulip foliage (only 1" tall) and then look at the lush stands of daffodils in full bloom. My answer to them is to plant daffodils!

By the way, Hydrangea's are hot! Many gardeners have been telling me about falling in love with the "new" hydrangeas. We are lucky here on the island to have many excellent nurseries with numerous selections.
