While I am not affiliated with Proven Winners, I did have the pleasure of participating in a Proven Winners unique container gardening plant trial during the 2003 growing season. This container trial was coordinated with the Annual Trials at Michigan State University's Horticultural Demonstration Gardens.I was enrolled in MSU's Horticultural Gardening Institute first Container Gardening Course which consisted of three full-day Saturday seminars, an on-line course and actually planning and growing five container plant gardens. The course was open only to Master Gardeners. As an integral part of the course, those Master Gardeners who completed the on-line course were given the opportunity to trial three new (never on any market) potential Proven Winner plants and followed the same exacting reporting guidelines as those followed in MSU's annual trials at their Demonstration Gardens. Proven Winners was the founding sponsor of the Container Gardening Program (which I understand is continuing at MSU this year and is being introduced in other states as well.
Among the materials supplied to us by Proven Winners was their "Gardener's Idea Book, which discussed the Proven Winners as follows:
"Since 1922....Our Master Gardeners and Breeders literally travel the world in search of exciting new varieties. From those new plants we then select the best of the best, and then conduct a series of intensive field trials in test sites across North America. Only the most colorful, fastest growing, disease resistant, vigorous and versatile plants earn the Proven Winners label.....Proven Winners plants provide instant beauty. You'll find colors, shapes, textures and sizes to suit any growing space. And because our plants are exceptionally healthy and vigorous you can enjoy their beauty from early
spring until late autumn and beyond."(In fact their "Fall Magic" selections flower into December in Michigan. MSU has done an over-wintering Pansy trialing.)
My understanding as to the difference between Proven Winners and Proven Selections is that Proven Winners can be successfully grown in any growing zone in North America, while Proven Selections will do well only in select growing regions. I do not claim to be absolutely certain about this; and as someone on the list previously suggested, John Gaydos is the best resource for the definitive answer to that question. He is extremely knowlegeable as well as dedicated, eager and enthusiastic about growing and sharing. I enjoyed my trialing of PW tremendously as well as the Container Gardening Program. I highly recommend it to anyone in the area as a wonderful learning experience.

Is there anyone on this list from the Proven Winners organization? If not, can anyone explain to me the difference between Proven Winners and Proven Selections? Plug pricing? Patents?
