I'm of two minds about Linda's post, re Stepables recommendations vs. her
fuming local plantsman who wanted her to write about plants he DID have.
Mind #1: Frances Hopkins has done big things with little plants, and I
admire the Stepables program; but why ask a grower in Salem, OR to
recommend plants for the Midwest?
Mind #2: The retailer in Linda's area could have, and probably should have,
parried her queries and countered Frances' recommendations with more tact, using
his experience with local climate/soil conditions to bolster his reasons for
carrying the plants he had and NOT those recommended -- e.g., "Yes, that's a
fine plant but a bit too tender for our winters; I prefer _______." He's got a
sale, Linda has a story.
