Re: Brooding

Hi,
Part of the Stepables program is to test plants in different parts of the country to determine how well they perform. Frances recommended plants that were proven performers for the Midwest based on field tests. The local nursery already carried some of the Stepables line, a few, in fact, that are actually only marginally hardy here. My original comment was in response to someone who asked if anyone else felt that rudeness or poor media relations practices from a business affected the way we write our stories.

BTW, when I write about a plant that I haven't grown, I always let my readers know. Some like to be on the cutting edge and try new things in their own gardens. If someone else, for example our local Missouri Botanical Garden, recommends a plant, I let them know that, too. I always try to find experts who know at least as much as I do. I can't realistically try every new plant myself. Anyway, just because something flourishes in my garden doesn't mean it will grow for everyone in my area. And, I'm sure I've killed a few things that thrive in gardens somewhere here in the heartland. So, I stand ready to be blasted by all of you who only write about what you grow.

I'm of two minds about Linda's post, re Stepables recommendations vs. her
fuming local plantsman who wanted her to write about plants he DID have.
Mind #1: Frances Hopkins has done big things with little plants, and I
admire the Stepables program; but why ask a grower in Salem, OR to recommend
plants for the Midwest?
Mind #2: The retailer in Linda's area could have, and probably should have,
parried her queries and countered Frances' recommendations with more tact,
using his experience with local climate/soil conditions to bolster his reasons
for carrying the plants he had and NOT those recommended -- e.g., "Yes, that's
a fine plant but a bit too tender for our winters; I prefer _______." He's
got a sale, Linda has a story.
