Thanks for the ideas, Gene
Will try L. cardinalis this year in a pot for my patio. I'll report back in fall. The hummingbirds have been scarce so far this spring.

Hello Lynn,
I enjoy two of the local species in my garden along with a cultivar known as Ruby Slippers. Try Lobelia siphilitica the Great Blue. Blooms August into September in nice violet-blue to blue depending upon the clone. There are names forms as well. Foliage is nice and broad at the base, heavy substance, good strong stem. Can get from about 2 to 3 feet in height. L. cardinalis or Cardinal flower is a show-stopper. Two to four feet in height, blooms in August. Individual flowers are about 1 1/2 inches long on racemes of about a foot. Some will have red in the stems. Will bring the hummingbirds to your patio for sure. Finally the cultivar or hybrid Ruby Slippers is about 5 to 6 feet in height and the color is exactly that.....Grape Knee-high is another color to look for...
Do let me know if you use any of the above and what you choose for companions.

- Good point, Gene. I use a few perennials in containers, however, most clients are not very garden-smart and complain when they have a short bloom time. What natives might you suggest for foliage? I've used heurchera for contrast and edgeing. Any other suggestions?
