Re: curious/summer bulbs

That would make good sense why the box stores don't have any...and the locals do. Orders from any of the boxes would be larger and give less profit (per plant) than a local nursery; while the grower can't meet the needs/price of the boxes, they can meet the much smaller needs of the local nursery. Besides, another good reason to promote the locals!

I was told by a local grower that the caladiums and cannas were affected by last year's hurricanes in Florida. I was told that it would be a year or two before caladiums and cannas were in ready supply again.

The local upscale nursery has all of the mentioned--started in pots, priced from $5.99 for a single (boring) Dahlia (the big and bold ones are evidently not available started.) Some tuberous begonias, and lots of cannas...around $10 for a gallon size pot.
What I've seen more of is a greater variety of the same old shade plants. And lots more foliage plants. It's been a nice season for choice in annuals.

My car is incapable of driving past a garden center, especially in spring. And anyway, I like to keep an eye on what the garden market is doing.

This year I have noticed a serious lack of summer bulbs. You know, dahlias, tuberous begonias, cannas and such. The big box stores have almost none, when is prior years they were featured in front. Is it just because I don't get out much, or have others noticed this?
