Dahlias, cannas, colocasia (alocasia), caladiums, etc. have all been very plentiful both in the box stores and garden centers in western Fairfield County in CT. And I've been grabbin' as many as my garden and back will allow. Box stores had them as early as Feb. so you could pot them up and get them going -- good thing, too, after the past two weeks!
I potted up non-stop begonias again this year since they were stupendous performers last year in all my shady containers and gardens. They truly are non-stop!
On the other hand, rosebud impatiens are few and far between. I had to get some early in the season at Christmas Tree Shops before the garden centers had them. Box stores in our area still aren't carrying them (I was on the hunt this a.m.).
Sorry, Melanie, I have no experience with Britt Marie Crawford -- only her cousins Othello and Dentata. All offspring of those two were true and are flourishing in their new homes.
Nice to have only a brief thunderstorm late this p.m. instead of the gray, cold weather we've had for nearly a week. I felt like I was back in London!
Regards for a happy holiday to all,
Lorraine Ballato

wholesalers but not in the box stores. Haven't seen a single Canna yet and
very few Caladiums. "Fascination" seems to be the hot Dahlia, actually any
dahlia with dark/purplish foliage is "in".
The tuberous begonias are available but none of them have "wowed" me this
year which is unusual.
The people I see are snapping up the double rose-like impatiens like crazy.
My mother in law though told me she'll never buy another one as it makes too
much of a mess. Then again she wants to know why I would want to grow more
than one variety of "host-ass" and exactly what is the significance of that
old sewing machine in my garden. (I told her it's because I need it to sow
seeds)
