Re: plectranthus, P. Sheild et al
Well, I would in no way assume that the lack of a particular plant in your area means that a shift in marketing, a wholesale crop failure, or the death of "real gardeners." As a part-time worker in a garden center, I see that every year a particular plant may not be available for a variety of reasons, but the next year we seem to be swimming in it. Sometimesit seems that a plant may fall off the radar screen of growers, but when we call and say "Do you have any ......" the growers take note and the next season everyone is growing it again. So ask your retail outlets to ask the growers - tell them that you like a plant and it may take root in the supply chain.
This year at Country Garden we have plenty of P. shield from Proven Winners, and Dahlias from a variety of growers, and today I unloaded trays of my favorite Plectrantus, "Lemon Twist" and promptly bought six of them. (The best for planting around the soon-to-go-dormant bleeding heart!) But I have not seen a single P. argentus...will start phoning growers tomorrow.
