Re: Polymers- jello

I thought I'd drop a note on a windy Sunday morning to round off my
thinking on this subject.

I've seen absurdio ad reductio arguments proposed - things such as we
breathe therefore we pollute. The classic argument indicating that
because everybody else does a lot of polluting, it's OK for me to do a
little too. Both seem to make sense on the surface but they're the
reasoning that leads thinkers such as James Lovelock to describe the
upcoming problems as a "culling of the human race". We can only hope
he's wrong as we play our word games.

I don't take any moral high ground on this issue - my ecological
footprint may be smaller than some but it is still typically North
American. It's still one I struggle with on a daily basis as I work
to get a handle on the issue. I'm interested in the responses on this
list from other writers and I've learned a lot.

I understand that those who use chemicals "wisely" think they're
being punished along with those who abuse them. As somebody who's
worked in garden center retail, I can only express delight that non-
professionals will no longer have access to chemicals. All who've
been in that situation can tell horror story after horror story about
abuse. We'll all have to change expectations of what we can
accomplish and how we can bend Mother Nature to our will. I also
suspect that as the wheel turns the use of chemicals in other parts of
horticulture and agriculture will also change.

I'm delighted at the exchange of practical solutions to this
individual problem. Once again, this list provides great info and
practical information - I've noted the urls and will be passing them
along to my readers. Thanks! to all who helped out with this.

I also note that for many this is an economic decision. Couldn't
agree more. If tax incentives were given to the environmentally
appropriate technologies the way they're given to big oil, (or simply
eliminated from big oil - unrealistic I know) then I suspect we'd see
some other changes. Human nature? Man, I can't even begin to go down
that road JF - but I agree almost 100% with what you wrote.

My dad told me a very long time ago that every little bit you do
counts. He was talking about other things at the time but the lesson
still makes sense to me now - more than ever.
