You're reading it right. Not a license to steal, as you have given them permission to do everything.... Have you looked at contracts for magazine articles or photo usages lately. Everyone wants everything they can get. In an online contract, it's not as easy to cross out any "offending" terminology with which you do not agree. 

The times, they are a'changing!!! and at an alarming rate.

Thanks for the great link.  There I found the recommendation to get your 
website listed in the Open Directory Project, which I was all set to do 
until I saw the terms and conditions, which includes this:  "I agree to 
grant Netscape Communications Corporation a non-exclusive, royalty-free 
license to use, publish, copy, edit, modify, or create derivative works from 
my submission."
Jeez, isn't this giving them license to steal?  Even to modify at will?  Am 
I reading it wrong or what? It's at www.dmoz.org.  Susan
