Fw: garden columns

If you are getting the same money for fewer words, you just got a raise!
After having cut my teeth on pubs that allowed me no more than 400-600
words, I recently received an assignment to write 1,000 words. It's just
as difficult to make the change, regardless on which side you started.
The solution for longer pieces is Part 1, Part 2, etc., or more to come
at the end of the column.

I've just been notified by the Indianapolis Star, that I need to cut
my weekly garden column from about 500 words to 350. The paper has
decreased its page size and enlarged the print, so there's just no
room, the editors say.

I've been writing 500 to 550 words since 1989, but am unsure if I'll
be able to communicate anything useful in 350 words.

Any thoughts? I'm bummed.
