writing fees and garden columns

Depends on the publication, but it generally averages out to $1.00 a 
word.  Usually I get paid extra for photos (I provide one-stop 
shopping), although sometimes I include photos in the package.  A small 
local newspaper probably doesn't have that kind of budget, though. 
    For several years I wrote a bi-monthly column for Log Home Living.  
They reduced the word count and payment, but made the column monthly.  
It was a lot more work to squeeze in the information with less words, a 
lot less fun to write because I spent all my time paring the text down 
to the essence, and I wasn't happy doing it for less money.  I resigned 
and put my focus on other opportunities.
