Re: Fw: garden columns

i once asked for a raise.
i now write for several different companies.
the gardening columns show up in lifestyles, rural, or wherever there's
space and often
sports would win out.

i now employ a slightly different bargaining tactic:

when readers say they like my column i thank them and then ask them to write
a letter to the editor.
when garden centre owners mention they like my column i ask them to tell
the advertising rep that they want their ad near my column. and just to keep
things clear, unless a local centre has done something extraordinary, no-one
gets a gratuitous plug.
since i've started with the latter, my column appears right next to the
adverts, and hasn't missed a week. so, they might not want to bump up the
pay a couple of dollars but they're not willing to let the advertising
revenue slip out of their fingers.
