Re: master gardeners and Scotts?????
I was not a part of the webinar but I do know that Scott's did have a
financial stake in it. As a member and director of GWA, I think that I view
that participation with the same degree of scepticism that I would any other
presentation at a clinic, conference, or seminar. Every statement needs to
be checked against what I know as fact, who I know that's involved, and who
said what about it.
Scott's has been a major sponsor of PAR over the many years. If you were at
Toronto, you saw Horace Hagedorn (since deceased) present a large check to
Bob LaGasse to feed the fund that got it started. Since then they have been
supporters of the program.
Since the board is entirely volunteer, policies have been very strictly
defined in a large manual that we all get. As an "Allied Member," Scott's
is given the same rights of membership to contact the group-at-large as any
other company that pays the freight to have the access.
If you are saying that GWA should exercise editorial control over its allied
members, you will be sadly disappointed in my response. We don't. We
can't. And I wouldn't want to if I could. The members of this list serve
are far more educated on the many and diverse issues that we discuss than
any board could legislate. I think that openess and discussion is by far
the better choice than editorial control. Free markets are healthy
environments.

I guess I'm getting confused here. I though GWA was supposed to be
representing writers not promoting any particular point of gardening view -
chemical or organic.
Can somebody from the board please clarify whether GWA received money from
Scotts to promote the water seminar or whether GWA simply facilitated it as
it would any other group wanting to promote it's products. What is board
policy on this kind of issue.
GWA didn't respond to the Gardenrant post and it would seem GWA is being
tarred with a brush of accepting corporate dollars to push a particular
company's agenda.
A clarification from the board would be appreciated here.
Doug.
