As far as we can tell from the plexiglass-fronted containers, there's no additional air space than in a regular container.  In fact, at the outset we feared there might not be enough air space but that fear turned out to be unfounded.  The conclusion is that the plant roots do better simply by virtue of having food and drink available 24/7 and being able to feed on their schedule, not a human one.  It seems to be that simple.
