Re: PR/bulk mail

I'm not going to say don't use gmail -- I know that it's useful and has
its place.

I wanted to point out reason why we block gmail access from NCSA (my day
job) in case it was relevant to anyone here.

Google policy states that they can keep any data indefinitely in backups.
Some of that data could also be stored in foreign countries. If you are
ever dealing with sensitive data that could result in litigation, is
hrotected by a non-disclosure agreement, etc. your email could be at
risk. We didn't want sensitive information to be made available via
requests in countries with less stringent privacy laws, nor did we want
to risk the possibility of a more lax administrative subpoena (which does
not require a judge's signature like a warrant does) if messages were
over 180 days old.

Chances are that none of this will never even matter. But if you or the
people that you do business with are paranoid, maybe it's something that
will shape any decisions about your email provider and/or what you send
through your account. Or maybe you'll start using PGP to encrypt sensitive
information.
